Musings on effortless beauty, from an apprentice of the science of skin.

Who doesn’t want cheeks smooth as a baby’s bottom? (Or in this case, cheeks that look like a baby’s bottom…)

Exfoliation is a part of every woman’s beauty regimen, to achieve a refreshed luminescence.  It has been part of mine since my high school days using St. Ives Apricot (and sandpaper) scrub from the drug store.  I’ve struggled balancing the desire for a healthy glow and the feeling that I could refinish a hardwood floor with the force I’m applying to my face.

This inclination to scrub our way to a healthy glow has been around since 1500 BC, when ancient Egyptians were using sandpaper to smooth out scars.  Modern science has seen that superficial trauma to the top layer of skin encourages the cells to normalize their growth to be more even and smooth.  This is the principle behind microdermabrasion, which is effective in treating acne scarring and roughness and pigment changes from sun damage.

However, you do not need your face belt-sanded on a daily basis to achieve this glow. The Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant is one of my favorite products of all time.  It uses a rice powder to gently smooth out your skin, in addition to chemical exfoliants, like salicylic acid.  Phytic acid, a natural compound from rice that hydrates and softens the skin, is also found in this awesome product.  Give this a try and no blindfolded fool will be able to tell the difference between your face and a newborn’s bum.
